Eddie Redmayne plays Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl

The first trailer for Eddie Redmayne’s transgender drama The Danish Girl has been revealed today (1 September).

The film tells the story of trans and intersex pioneer Lili Elbe, who traveled to Germany in the 1930s to have gender reassignment surgery. Virtually untested at the time, she died when her body rejected a uterus that had been transplanted with the goal of having children.

Based on David Ebershoff’s 2001 novel of the same name, Redmayne is joined with his Les Miserables director Tom Hooper. Lucinda Coxon wrote the screenplay, with Matthias Schoenaerts and Amber Heard also starring.

While the film has faced criticism for choosing to not cast a trans actor, critics who have seen the film are saying Redmayne could very easily win another Oscar for his role.

Redmayne, who won Best Actor last year for his work in The Theory of Everything, said he did a lot of research and asked a lot of trans men and women about their experiences.

‘People were so kind and generous with their experience, but also so open,’ he told Out magazine. ‘I felt like, I’m being given this extraordinary experience of being able to play this woman, but with that comes this responsibility of not only educating myself but hopefully using that to educate.’

The Danish Girl will be released on 27 November.
