YouTuber Tati Westbrook has aired out her issues with makeup vlogger James Charles.
The OG beauty guru dropped a 43 minute-long video giving the rundown on her version of events yesterday (10 May). As a result, Charles responded with an eight minute apology video later in the day (11 May).
In a series of events that span sponsored deals, seething words, and unintended flirtations, the pair have fallen out with one another.
Charles entered the YouTube scene two years ago, but his friendship with Westbrook reached before then. She met Charles when he was 17.
The now 19-year-old has constantly credited Westbrook, 37, with being the reason he got into makeup in the first place.
Fast-forwarding a few years, and during the first weekend of Coachella earlier this year, Charles posted a sponsored post for SugarBearHair. A hair vitamin brand.
However, here’s when things heat up.
Westbrook’s hair supplement brand she founded, Halo Beauty, is a competitor of SugarBearHair. Westbrook has run the business since 2018.
In two Instagram stories, Westbrook commented that what Charles did was ‘not right.’
Meanwhile, Charles publicly responded and apologized. He explained the ‘oversight’ and that he was ‘devastated’ by the reaction the sponsored post tracked.
The nearly 45 minute-long video is Westbrook’s response to this and several other situations.
What did she say?
In the video titled ‘BYE SISTER…’, Westbrook claimed that Charles doesn’t feel ‘comfortable’ promoting Halo Beauty on his channel because he doesn’t want to promote supplements to his largely young audience.
But then he did exactly that with Westbrook’s competitor.
She said she felt ‘used’ because she and her husband James Westbrook, have negotiated deals on behalf of Charles.
Moreover, she’s plugged his Morphe makeup palette discount code in numerous of her own videos. She catalogues examples in the first few minutes of the video.
Furthermore, she added that her husband has grievances about the friendship. ‘Back in the beginning, my husband was like, “You know you’re not best friends with him, like he’s a kid,”‘ Tati revealed.
In addition, she alleged that Charles came to the couple for business advice on multiple occasions.
Charles would eventually take part in the couple’s wedding, doing Westbrook’s makeup in exchange for a flight and hotel room. She said he ‘didn’t have the money’ for either amenities.
‘It’s sad that I will never be able to watch my wedding video without seeing his face or thinking of him and thinking about all the things I hoped our relationship would be,’ Tati added.
‘I always envisioned that he would grow up. That at some point we would eventually meet up as friends because he would be an adult.’
‘Lie to me and make me the villain’
Westbrook went onto allege that Charles has spread rumors about her.
She said: ‘For you to lie to me and make me the villain, and go around and circulate a story to work on your side saying I’m loving the drama because it’s improving sales.
‘That’s not the case. You’re my family, I love you still … this is not about money at all.’
She also claimed he hit on a waiter that Westbrook believed to be heterosexual at a restaurant. She said she was horrified by how inappropriate it had been, and that Charles had behaved in a ‘gross’ this way in front of her friends and family.
James Charles’ reply
Charles posted a stripped-down video apologizing to Westbrook. ‘I am so disappointed in mused that I hurt her,’ he said in the video titled ‘tati.’
‘To Tati and James Westbrook, I’m sorry,’ the CoverGirl ambassador said. ‘At this point, the truth really does not matter, it’s the feelings that do.
Charles acknowledged the alleged altercation with the waiter indirectly. He explained: ‘I’ve learned the hard way about ways that I can interact with boys that I’m interested in and also the ones that I should or shouldn’t be talking to.’
