Cork footballer Valerie Mulcahy has come out as gay, the first ever high profile Gaelic Athletic Association star to do so publicly.
The goalkeeper, who also works as a secondary school teacher, will appear in a RTÉ documentary by Donal Óg Cusack talking about what it is like to be gay in today’s Ireland.
During the film, she appears with her partner.
‘When I was young, I didn’t want to be gay,’ she tells Cusack.
She says she wanted to appear in the documentary so that she might help others and make other women in similar situations feel more comfortable with who they are.
Mulcahy, who is part of the nine-time all Ireland winning team Cork LGFA, is one of the most recognizable faces in the game.
Cusack, the man behind the documentary, was the first openly gay GAA sports star and a former hurling captain.
His documentary Coming Out Of The Curve will look at attitudes towards homosexuality at home and abroad.
Also appearing in the documentary will be Nikki Symmons, the most capped Irish female athlete of all time as well as retired rugby international Shane Horgan.
Coming Out Of The Curve will air on RTÉ on Monday 19 January.
