It’s time for a trans James Bond, says Dominic West

Dominic West and Hannah Graf

The next person to play James Bond should be trans, Dominic West has said.

And not just anyone, but the British Army’s highest ranking trans soldier, Hannah Graf.

In an interview with the Sunday Times Magazine, the 49-year-old star of The Wire spoke about why he thought Graf would be the ideal choice while discussing his upcoming film, Colette.

‘There’s a very cool woman who’s the wife of an actor in Colette, who is a captain in the electrical engineers, the highest-ranking transgender soldier in the army,’ West said.

‘She’s done two tours of Afghanistan. She’s a beautiful blonde girl who could be Bond, yes. That’s actually a brilliant idea.’

‘They should have a transgender Bond because there are a lot of transgender people in the army. They’d be ideal because they can do everything. That’s a great idea! A transgender Bond.’

Graf is a captain serving with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.

Replying West’s offer on Instagram, she wrote: ‘Big thanks to Dominic West, but surely a role best suited to my actor husband.’

Graf is married to Jake Graf, who is also trans.

Who will be the next 007?

Fans have been speculating for years over who will take over from Daniel Craig to play the next 007.

Many have hoped that Bond will be played by an LGBTI actor, a woman, or even be gay or bisexual in his next outing (though polling suggests fans aren’t so keen on the latter).

As it stands, Idris Elba is one of the front-runners to step into the spy’s shoes.

If this happens, it will make Elba the first actor of color to play the iconic spy.
