Jared Leto has spoken out against the movie industry’s conservatism and homophobia, stating a gay leading man would likely not have the same opportunities and jobs as a straight one.
The Suicide Squad star, who plays the Joker in the new DC film, got serious when asked about the LGBTI community in film.
In an interview with GQ Style, he was asked if he thought America would accept a gay leading man.
While he first thought, ‘I think so’, this later changed to a ‘I hope so’ after being asked for clarification.
‘I definitely don’t think a gay leading man would have the same opportunities as a straight leading man,’ Leto said. ‘I don’t think that. Not for a single second.’
‘I don’t know if that’s offensive or not, but that’s my thought right now,’ he added. ‘It shouldn’t be that way. I don’t think you’ll have as many opportunities.’
He said he feared the same is true from people of black and minority ethnic backgrounds and those with disabilities, as well as other minorities.
‘What a word, “minority,”‘ he said. ‘Have we taken that word off the list yet? ‘Cause it should be. Anyway, no, I think that this is still a very conservative business.’
