Andy Griffith Show actor Jim Nabors dies at 87

Jim Nabors, known for his role as Gomer Pyle on The Andy Griffith Show, died today (30 November) at 87.

According to family friend and CNN affiliate Phil Arnone, Nabors had been ‘battling health issues for some time‘.

Nabors passed away in Honolulu with his husband, Stan Cadwallader, at his side. They married in 2013 in Seattle.

The actor, singer, and comedian was originally born in Alabama before moving to Southern California. There, Andy Griffith discovered him at the Santa Monica nightclub The Horn.

Nabors’ character on The Andy Griffith Show, the doltish mechanic Gomer, proved so popular he got his own spinoff series.¬†Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. ran for five seasons from 1964 to 1969 on CBS.

He received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1991.

As a singer, he released 28 albums, several of which went gold or platinum. He first revealed his singing voice on the 1964 episode of The Andy Griffith Show, The Song Festers.

He is survived by his husband.
