Joe Biden and Kamala Harris include LGBT+ Americans in first joint appearance

  • The Democrats used their speeches to attack Trump’s record which has left the country ‘in tatters’.
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

Joe Biden introduced Kamala Harris as ‘a pioneer in marriage equality’ as they made their first public appearance together since he chose her as his future vice president.

And Harris also mentioned LGBTQ+ people in her speech as she talked about Americans standing up for civil rights.

Biden proudly introduced the 55-year-old Californian senator as the ‘child of immigrants’. She is the first black woman on a major presidential ticket in US history.

He said: ‘And this morning, all across the nation, little girls woke up, especially little black and brown girls that feel overlooked and undervalued in their communities. But today – today just maybe they’re seeing themselves for the first time in a new way.’

Moreover he told supporters that Harris is the right person to help him rebuild the country that Donald Trump has left ‘in tatters’.

Biden added: ‘This is a serious moment for our nation. The choice we make this November is going to decide the future of America for a very long time.

‘Kamala is smart, she’s tough, she’s experienced, she’s a proven fighter for the backbone of this country, the middle class, for all those who are struggling to get into the middle class.

‘She knows how to govern, she knows how to make the hard calls, she’s ready to do this job on day one.’

Marriage equality pioneer

Furthermore he went on to praise her record both as a US senator and as the former attorney general for California.

Biden said she ‘took on the big banks over mortgage fraud and won’ as well as taking on ‘big oil’ and the ‘gun lobby’. Moreover he said ‘she was a pioneer in marriage equality’.

As attorney general she refused to defend California’s Proposition 8 which temporarily struck down marriage equality in the state.

Indeed, when marriage equality became legal in California, she officiated the first same-sex wedding. It’s part of a long track record as an LGBT+ ally which she pledges to continue.

Inspired by regular Americans – including LGBT+

In her own speech, Harris said Trump ‘inherited the longest economic expansion in history from Barack Obama and Joe Biden. And then, like everything else he inherited, he ran it straight into the ground.’

She added: ‘America is crying out for leadership. Yet we have a president who cares more about himself than the people who elected him. A president who is making every challenge we face more difficult to solve.

‘This is what happens when we elect a guy who just isn’t up for the job. Our country ends in tatters and so does our reputation around the world.’

‘Whenever I think there is a reason for doubt, whenever I have had my own doubts, I think of you, the American people.

‘The doctors and nurses and frontline workers who are risking your lives to save others; the truck drivers and the workers in grocery stores, in factories and farms, putting your own safety on the line to help us get through this pandemic.

‘The women and students taking to the streets in unprecedented numbers; the dreamers and immigrants who know families belong together; the LGBTQ Americans who know that love is love. People of every color and creed who are finally declaring that, yes, black lives matter.’

The event was on Wednesday afternoon. It was held in the gym at Alexis I du Pont High School in Wilmington, Delaware – Biden’s hometown. There was no real world audience due to coronavirus but it was livestreamed and televised.

Likewise Biden and Harris will formally accept their nominations at the Democratic National Convention online next week.
