Rio Olympics judo champion Rafaela Silva comes out as gay

Rafaela Silva, the judo champion at the Rio Olympics, has come out as gay.

The first Brazilian to win a gold medal at this year’s Games, she has revealed she is in a loving relationship with her partner of three years.

She won her medal in the 57k (125 pounds) category in women’s judo.

Speaking to Globo magazine, Silva revealed how her partner Thamara Cezar is her press agent and social media manager.

On Silva’s Instagram, there are numerous loving pictures of the athletic couple.

“Quando a gente ama é assim Briga, separa, quebra a cara e volta Vê que sem o outro a vida é tão sem graça”

They have three dogs, who they call their ‘kids’, and she credits Cezar for being there as she trained and worked hard in her preparations for the Olympics.

‘She was there every day and knew how I was feeling, when I was sick when I wasn’t,’ Silva said. ‘Everything I needed, she was there to do it, so she is also very important in this victory’.

Silva is one of the record 48 openly LGBTI athletes in Rio.
