Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has revealed why he decided to wear Muslim socks to Toronto Pride yesterday (25 June).

The year’s theme was inclusivity, which Trudeau decided to mark with his footwear.

On the socks, it read ‘Eid Muburak’ – honoring the religious holiday that marks the end of Ramadan. The Islamic holy month of fasting ending coincided with Pride.

‘It is all about including people,’ he told the press. ‘This is why I am happy to wish a Eid Muburak to everyone of the Muslim faith.

‘It’s all about how we celebrate the multiple layers of identities that make Canada extraordinary and strong, and today we celebrate with the entire LGBTQ community.’

While Trudeau was praised for his socks on social media, some criticized him as many Muslim-majority countries directly attack LGBTI people.

The theme of inclusivity followed last year’s parade where Black Lives Matter disrupted the march to ensure uniformed police did not walk the streets in the 2017 event.

While BLM did not march, they did hold a protest following the parade.

‘Wherever they go,’ activist Rodney Diverlus said of police,’ black folks will resist their presence’.

Trudeau was joined by his wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, and their children Xavier and Ella-Grace.
