Katie Hopkins faces off with lesbian columnist – that was a mistake

Britain’s controversy-mongerer Katie Hopkins is known for being ready to face off with absolutely anyone.

But when she accused lesbian cook and columnist Jack Monroe of defacing war memorials, that was a big mistake.

Writing on Twitter, Hopkins messaged Monroe: ‘Scrawled on any memorials recently? Vandalised the memory of those who fought for your freedom. Grandma got any more medals?’

The tweet has since been deleted.

Monroe immediately fired back, tweeting: ‘I have NEVER "scrawled on a memorial". Brother in the RAF. Dad was a Para in the Falklands.

‘You’re a piece of shit.’

Taking a screenshot of Hopkins’ deleted tweet, Monroe added: ‘Dear @KTHopkins, public apology + £5k to migrant rescue & I wont sue. It’ll be cheaper for you & v.satisfying for me.’

Shut up by Monroe, Hopkins admitted she had got confused between the gay chef and columnist Laurie Penny.

Penny, who writes for The Guardian, said she felt sympathy for the people who scrawled ‘Out Tory Scum’ on a World War 2 memorial. She said she regretted her timing and said she was proud of her Maltese grandmother who was awarded for her efforts during the war.

Despite that, Hopkins said she didn’t see much different between the two women.

She said: ‘Can someone explain to me – in 10 words or less the difference between irritant @PennyRed and social anthrax @MsJackMonroe

Monroe was only happy to respond again.

Hopkins & I both attended @BritLGBTAwards last month,’ she said.

‘I sat at the top table. People moved OFF her table. Apparently I’M "social anthrax".’
