Britain’s most-hated newspaper columnist loses libel case against non-binary celeb

Katie Hopkins has to pay £24,000 to food writer Jack Monroe

Britain’s most-hated right-wing newspaper columnist been beaten in the High Court by a famous non-binary food writer.

Katie Hopkins tweeted Jack Monroe vandalized a war memorial during an anti-austerity demo – but the claims were entirely untrue.

According to Monroe’s laywers, quoted in the Guardian, Hopkins was fully aware that she was making false allegations.

Today (10 March), Hopkins was ordered by the High Court to pay £24,000 in damages to Monre after a 21-month legal battle.

Shortly after the news broke, Monroe tweeted their thanks, saying ‘I sued her for libel. and I won.’

Monroe told the High Court Hopkins caused ‘serious harm’ to their reputation.

Monroe, who called the legal dispute an ‘unproductive, devastating nightmare’, also said they received death threats after Hopkins’ tweets.

But what did Katie Hopkins actually say?

In 2015, in an apparent case of mistaken identity, Hopkins sent tweets to Monroe after a London memorial was vandalized.

During an anti-austerity demonstration, someone sprayed ‘Fuck Tory scum’ onto the Memorial to the Women of the Second World War on London’s Whitehall.

In a tweet directed to Monroe’s account – then still @MsJackMonroe – Hopkins wrote: ‘Scrawled on any memorials recently? Vandalised the memory of those who fought for your freedom. Grandma got any more medals?’

The writer answered, saying: ‘I have NEVER ‘scrawled on a memorial’. Brother in the RAF. Dad was a Para in the Falklands. You’re a piece of shit.’

The High Court heard it was a case of mistaken identity, as Hopkins argued she had mistaken Monroe for someone else.

Monroe later asked Hopkins to apologize and said they wouldn’t sue the columnist if the apology was public and she donated £5,000 to a charity rescuing migrants.

Hopkins deleted her libelous tweet, but did not apologize despite having no proof for any of the allegations.

Who are they?

Hopkins shot to fame for being the first contestant to voluntarily quit the UK version of The Apprentice.

She is now known for writing a column for the Daily Mail. She left her former job at the Sun over a column in which she compared migrants to cockroaches.

Monroe came out as non-binary transgender in 2015; they came to fame through A Girl Named Jack, a blog where they shared recipes for making food on a tight budget.
