Lady Gaga and Glee nominated for GLAAD awards

The US Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has nominated Leonardo DiCaprio movie J Edgar, Lady Gaga and Glee for its awards.

The list of 116 nominees in 25 English-language categories, and 35 Spanish-language nominees in 10 categories was announced today in Los Angeles.

Among them are Beginners, starring Christopher Plummer and Ewan McGregor, Albert Nobbs, starring Glenn Close and Janet McTeer and Showtime's hit shows Shameless and The Big C. Ricky Martin is nominated in the Spanish language categories. (A full list is below.)

The 23rd annual GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies – the biggest event of its kind in the world – will be held in New York on 24 March at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square; in Los Angeles on 21 April at the Westin Bonaventure; and in San Francisco on 2 June at San Francisco Marriott Marquis.

Special honorees for each city will be announced in the coming weeks.

GLAAD is the US’s top lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender media advocacy and anti-defamation organization and its awards are designed to be a benchmark for the media industry and encourage positive representation of gay, bi and transgender people.

Mike Thompson, GLAAD’s acting president, said: ‘As media continue to tell new stories about LGBT people and families, a majority of Americans now support full equality of LGBT Americans.

‘This year’s nominees enlighten and entertain, while spotlighting the diversity of our community. Audiences expect to see their own worlds reflected in media, and today more than ever, those include the lives of LGBT people. Viewers know that LGBT characters and stories are simply natural extensions of, and glimpses into, their own experiences from across America.’
