While gay marriage is slowly spreading – state by state – in the US, none of the states where it has become legal have been in the South.
Mississippi native Lance Bass, engaged to marry actor Michael Turchin, is confident that is about to change.
‘We’re here; our feet are planted here in Mississippi, and we can tell you by experience that there’s tons of support down here,’ Bass says in a video released Thursday (13 March) by Southerners for the Freedom to Marry.
Bass adds: ‘Growing up in the South and seeing how change is definitely happening down here way faster than I ever thought it would happen here, I think we have grown leaps and bounds … This is where we need to start taking it to the next level. We need to open the dialogue about this.’
Bass, a former member of the boy band ‘N Sync, has become an outspoken LGBTI activist since coming out publicly in 2006. Last week, he revealed that former bandmate Joey Fatone found out he was gay when he walked in on Bass and a boyfriend who was sitting on his lap.
