Laverne Cox becomes first trans actress to be nominated for an Emmy

Laverne Cox has become the first transgender person to be nominated for an Emmy in an acting category.

When nominations were ann0unced in Los Angeles this morning, Cox received a nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Sophia Burset in Orange is the New Black.

Her competition will include two OITNB co-stars (Natasha Lyonne ans Uzo Aduba) and a trio of established veterans: Tina Fey (Saturday Night Live), Melissa McCarthy (Saturday Night Live) and Joan Cusack (Shameless).

Cox took to Twitter to congratulate her show for its 12 nominations overall including best comedy and wrote: ‘So proud to be working with all of you on such a groundbreaking show.’

GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis issued a statement pointing out the significance of Cox’s nomination: ‘Laverne Cox continues to break barriers. Today, countless transgender youth will hear the message that they can be who they are and still achieve their dreams – nothing is out of reach. Laverne’s success on a hit series is a clear indication that audiences are ready for more trans characters on television.’
