Glamour highlighted Laverne Cox and other women at their annual Women of the Year Awards.
The publication honored Cox and four other women as ‘firsts’ at the Monday (13 November) night ceremony. Glamour recognized Cox as the first transgender woman nominated for a Primetime Emmy for an acting role.
Joining her was Ibtihaj Muhammad, the first Muslim American woman to represent the US at the Olympics competing in a hijab; Sarah Weddington, who represented ‘Jane Roe’ in the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court case that legalized abortions; Katie Couric, the first solo female anchor of a nightly news program; and Ruby Bridges, who became the first black student to desegregate William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans.
Here are the five women all together.
Cox also included a moving caption with her series of photos.
‘There are not enough pictures and videos to convey the magnitude of the power of the #GlamourWOTY event last night,’ she wrote.
‘The room was filled with incredible women loving, supporting and listening to one another. Women standing in our truths, power and solidarity. I was moved to tears multiple times.’
She mentioned each of her fellow honorees and had a specific note to Bridges.
‘I couldn’t actually find the right words to say to Ruby Bridges the debt of gratitude I owe her and struggle,’ the caption further read. ‘My education is the reason I am here. I was just so overwhelmed.’
Her caption ended: ‘I had other moments where I was beyond overwhelmed and deeply honored. Thank you to all the women who shared space last night and all the women everywhere. You give me strength to continue. I am nothing without you.’
Not to mention Cox also looked stunning.
In her speech, Cox quoted Mother Teresa: ‘I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone in the waters to create many ripples.’
She continued: ‘Today, as more of us declare our right to exist in public space, our many ripples will become tidal waves of change.’
Also honored at the ceremony were Samantha Bee, Maxine Waters, and more.
The ‘firsts’ segment starts around the 1:59:00 mark.
