Laverne Cox slays New York Fashion Week runway

Laverne Cox at the 11 Honore runway show, 6 February, Spring Studios, New York

Laverne Cox was the surprise guest at the New York Fashion Week show from 11 Honore last night.

Cox ended the plus-size brand’s runaway show Wednesday night at Spring Studios, strutting down the catwalk in a sumptuous Zac Posen-designed red gown.

Cox posted a video of her appearance to her Instagram.

Accompanying the video she said: ‘What an incredible honor to close @11honore’s first fashion show with these incredible women who represent the size diversity of the women of America. Thank you for existing @11honore and for giving me this incredible honor. …thank you @zacposen for the gown of LIFE!!! #TransIsBeautiful #SizeInclusivity #SizeDiversity’

Trans actress Cox shot to fame on Orange Is The New Black. She subsequently starred in the show Doubt and played the part of Dr Frank’n’furter on a TV version of The Rocky Horror Show. She’s also been a leading advocate for trans rights.

Luxury e-commerce site 11 Honore launched in 2016. It caters for women’s sizes 10 and up. Last night’s show, opened by plus-size model Candice Huffine, was its New York Fashion Week debut.

No Sesso and Pierre Davis

Cox’s appearance on the runway was not New York Fashion Week’s only major trans moment. On Monday, trans designer Pierre Davis made her NYFW debut.

Her gender-neutral label, No Sesso held its first full runway show for their Fall/Winter 2019 collection on Monday afternoon at Pier 59 Studios in New York City. She is the first trans woman designer to feature on NYFW’s official schedule.
