A photo of a man proposing to his boyfriend on the streets of Shanghai has gone viral on Chinese social media.
A Weibo user Saturday (24 January) night posted four photos of the the man proposing to and kissing his boyfriend, and of his silver BMW convertible filled with white roses.
‘This just happened! Near Taicang Road in Shanghai, a male-male marriage proposal!’ wrote nikawa.
‘Forgive the bad photo quality, when I was taking the photo, my leg kept shaking from excitement…’
The post has since had nearly 70,000 retweets, more than 40,000 likes and 25,000 comments.
While many commenters said the scene was ‘disgusting,’ the majority came to the couple’s defence.
‘What’s disgusting isn’t homosexuality but your intolerance… It isn’t even up to you to tolerate or approve of them,’ one wrote.
‘I support the legalization of gay marriage… that way, gender imbalance is not a problem,’ another wrote, referring to the large disparity between boys and girls due to the country’s one-child policy.
Others expressed jealousy or said the man proposing looked like China’s richest man Jack Ma.
China does not recognize gay marriage or civil unions.
