The new Aladdin film is getting a lot of criticism.
Barring the fears of racism and appropriation, people also say video clips look low-energy, shot badly and poorly animated.
While we have to wait and see what to make of the Will Smith vehicle, we have an alternative.
Lea Salonga, the singing voice of the original animated Jasmine, and up-and-coming gay actor Vincent Rodriguez III, performed Aladdin together last night (13 May).
Lea Salonga performs A Whole New World from Aladdin with Vincent Rodriguez III
(Song starts at 4:30).
The Filipino superstar was in New York City on her tour, performing at the Sony Hall.
In the audience was Crazy Ex-Girlfriend leading man, Vincent, and his husband.
In fact, Lea and Vincent know each other.
Lea played Vincent’s aunt on the season one finale of mental health musical show Crazy Ex-Girlfriend – performing an Aladdin-style comedic ballad.
So when Lea asked for a volunteer from the audience, he couldn’t help but raise his hand.
‘Dream come true’
‘Yall, tonight, one of my dreams come true,’ Vincent posted on Instagram.
‘I got to sing A Whole New World with my Auntie, errr, I mean, the original Princess Jasmine from Disney’s Aladdin.
‘A movie that shaped my love of Disney and musicals. I still hope to one day voice and sing as an original character in a Disney animated series.
‘Tonight was truly magical. Thank you Lea!’
Vincent revealed in the comments that the two had zero rehearsal. He was just like any other audience volunteer who got up to sing.
It’s no surprise he was perfect. He previously auditioned for Aladdin on Broadway.
And, as Josh Chan in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, he’s sung genres like Gene Kelly, pop punk, and 90s boyband.
Plus, as he says: ‘It’s A Whole New World from Aladdin. How could I not know it?’
