Two teen girls recently made local history after becoming the first same-sex couple to be crowned prom king and queen at their school.
Students at Leon High School in Tallahassee, Florida, crowned lesbian teens Brie Grimes, 17, and Lindsey Creel, 18, at their dance last month.
The students have been a couple for three years and hope their victory raises awareness about LGBTI issues and helps others.
‘It feels good to know some of the things we’ve been a part of can help others going through tough experiences, in a positive way,’ Grimes tells Tallahassee.com.
‘I needed someone in my life to show me that it would work out — when I was first going through this years ago. But I didn’t have that.’
The school founded a Gay Straight Alliance in 2001.
Says history teacher Scott Brown who sponsored the launch of the group: ‘It makes me feel proud to know that the majority of Leon students are open-minded and agree with today’s changing mores. Leon may be a traditional school, but we can be known as progressive.’
