Earlier this week, a mother, her female partner, and two children were killed in Troy, New York.
Police found the family bound and with their throats slashed. Troy Police Chief John Tedesco described it as an act of ‘savagery’ at a news conference.
Now, the police department is vowing to solve the crime. ‘We’re going to get to the bottom of it,’ Troy Police Captain Daniel DeWolf told NBC News.
The victims have also been identified. Shanta Myers, 36, her 11-year-old son Jeremiah, her 5-year-old daughter Shanise, and her partner, Brandi Mells, 22, were found in the basement the day after Christmas.
Myers had another son who was out of the house at the time of the incident.
DeWolf further said the police believe the family was targeted. ‘We don’t think there’s some madman out there running loose that’s going to kill someone else.’
‘Her heart was bigger than she was’
Myers’ family remembered her when the news came.
‘She goes out of her way to want to be loved. She wouldn’t be involved in anything that would be close to deserving this,’ her sister, Shakera Symes, said.
Symes further said one of Myers’ greatest joys was cooking for family. ‘She always had one of the biggest dishes.’
Dria Hector, a friend of Mells, also spoke about her. ‘She was a little person but her heart was bigger than she was,’ she said. Mells had dwarfism and lived in Troy with her mother when she met Myers.
Symes added: ‘It is a complete mystery at this point but I am urging anyone and everyone who has the slightest bit of information at this point to come forward.’
