Lesbian dating app Her secures $1million in investment funding

Connect and meet women via Her

The women’s dating app Dattch, launched by London entrepreneur Robyn Exton, has announced that it has rebranded itself under a new name, Her, and secured $1million in seed funding.

It’s believed that the branding change came about after both users and potential investors expressed confusion over the meaning of the previous name.

Exton, who formerly worked for a brand strategy agency in London, taught herself coding in her spare time before launching Dattch in September 2013.

She relocated to San Francisco in 2014 and has worked tirelessly to refine and promote the app – aimed at lesbian, bi and not-so-straight women – since that time.

It has quickly carved itself out a niche position in the world of online dating apps, but Exton [pictured] believes it could expand much further – and has now managed to persuade others of her vision with the help of the Her rebranding.

Not only will the money help her to continue her global expansion program, but it is likely to come with helpful startup advice. Those behind the investment include Alexis Ohanian, founder of Reddit, Michael Birch, founder of Bebo, and Andy McLoughlin from Huddle, reports Tech City News.

‘A lot of investors know very little about the lesbian market because it’s a lot of white middle-aged men,’ Exton told CNN Money. ‘The people that we’ve got share in the vision of what we’re doing.’

Rather than focusing primarily on user’s looks, Her offers more of a social experience to comparable dating apps – with users able to search for those with common interests, follow a blog on things of interest to the lesbian/bi community, and find out information on events where they might meet up with others.

In fact, users profiles have been compared more to Pinterest-style collections of boards, showcasing a wider insight into that person’s thoughts, likes and dislikes.

‘That’s what makes a girl attractive to someone,’ says Exton said. ‘It’s seeing the interesting parts of how she lives.’

Her is available from the iTunes store. An Android version is currently in development.
