A museum in the conservative southern US state of Alabama is launching a lesbian awareness exhibit tonight (30 March).
Living in Limbo: Lesbian Families in the Deep South will open at The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and features photography by Carolyn Sherer.
It will be located beside existing galleries which display images of the American struggle for civil rights.
'We're hoping to start a conversation about equality for everyone,' Sherer told SF Gate.
The inspiration for the exhibition was Sherer's own experiences of growing up in Alabama and the history of inequality when it comes to legal rights and acceptance.
'That galvanized my resolve to go ahead and address my own identity as a lesbian,' she added.
'This really is my coming out story.'
The Institute, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, has the tagline 'Chronicling the past to inspire the future.'
