Lesbian poker star gets engaged, then wins over $1 million

A lesbian professional poker player has made history by taking home more than a million dollars on Monday (14 January).

But for Vanessa Selbst, 28, it was proposing to her long-term girlfriend in the Bahamas the night before that really made her week.

After her girlfriend said yes, Selbst took home a whopping $1.4 million (£876k, €1.04m) in the final game.

Speaking to PokerStars.TV, she said: ‘I thought if I did it the night before the Super High Roller, that would make me, like, extra lucky.

‘So far it’s been working, so I think that was a pretty good strategy.’

With more than $7 million in winnings, Selbst has become the highest-earning female tournament player in poker, and one of the only high-profile lesbians in the game.

‘You see so few out LGBT people in the media,’ she says, that even one person can make a huge difference. ‘You’re doing something that’s bigger than yourself.’

Since 2006 Selbst has won numerous major titles, including two World Series of Poker bracelets, two NAPT main events, and the Partouche main event.
