Lesbian US Senator: Trump ‘being played as a puppet’ by Pence on anti-LGBTI ‘religious freedom’ order

US Senator Tammy Baldwin is blasting US President Donald Trump over reports he is poised to sign a religious freedom order legalizing LGBTI discrimination.

The signing could happen as early as today (4 May) to coincide with the National Day of Prayer.

‘After President Trump was elected, he said he wanted to be a President “for all Americans” but if this discriminatory order is signed, he would be breaking his word to the American people and authorizing taxpayer funded discrimination,’ Baldwin said in a statement.

‘This isn’t presidential leadership, this is an attack on our founding principles that all Americans are created equal under the law and that every American deserves the freedom to live their lives free from discrimination.’

A previous draft had been leaked back in early February but no action was taken at that time following a massive outcry.

That draft called for religious freedom ‘when providing social services, education, or healthcare; earning a living, seeking a job, or employing others; receiving government grants or contracts; or otherwise participating in the marketplace, the public square, or interfacing with Federal, State or local governments.’

The draft created exemptions for people and organizations who claim religious or moral objections to same-sex marriage and trans identity as well as premarital sex and abortion.

States Baldwin: ‘The Trump Administration was right to walk away from this executive order months ago. President Trump should do the right thing and work to move America forward, instead of being played as a puppet by Vice President Pence to advance an extreme right agenda that seeks to give individuals and groups a license to discriminate against people because of who they are or who they love.’
