LGBTI heroes recognized in glitzy California award ceremony

LGBTI heroes in the USA were recognized at an award ceremony in California on Saturday night (29 September).

The country’s largest statewide LGBTI civil rights organization held a night in celebration of community advocates.

The night recognized comedian Kathy Griffin, local nightclub owner Jewel Thais-Williamson, and the cast and crew of Queer Eye for their contributions to LGBTI rights.

The evening was hosted by comedian Dana Goldberg. Brandon Stansell, Thelma Houston, DJ MASHA and Vanderpump Rules’ Billie Lee performed.

Singer and actor Lance Bass and congressman Jimmy Gomez also attended the event.

Awardees

Founder of legendary LGBTI venue The Catch One, Jewel Thais-Williamson was awarded the Community Leadership Award.

‘The Catch One became a haven’ she said. ‘Its for gays, lesbians, bis, tries, and otherwise’, she said.

‘It’s important for all of us to keep our gayness, our greatness alive,’ she told the gala.

Griffin received the Ally Leadership Award for her dedication to LGBTI causes.

She previously lobbied against a California law to prohibit same-sex marriage and worked to try to repeal the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell military policy.

Griffin also raised $5 million for HIV/AIDS prevention and queer civil rights organizations.

‘She has used her vivacious personality and infectious laugh to fight for social justice, for LGBTQ equality, and for people living with HIV’, said Equality California.

Kathy has been one of Hollywood’s loudest voices speaking out against hate and division’.

Equality California handed the cast, crew, and production of Queer Eye the Equality Visibility Award.

‘They’ve made us laugh — and cry– at a time when we needed it most’, Equality California said.

Previous Equality California honorees include Sharon Stone, Conrad Ricamora and Adam Lambert.
