Lil Nas X’s Old Town Road on track to become diamond certified while still #1 on the charts

Lil Nas X’s popular song Old Town Road has reached diamond certification eligibility. With his hit single going triple-platinum, it is on track to become diamond certified.
Tell me more
Diamond certification indicates that streams and sales of the track have moved upwards of ten million. Lil Nas X is the latest artist to be on track for diamond certification while the song is still number one on the Hot 100 chart. Elton John’s Candle In The Wind became the first diamond-certified song ever in 1997.
Forbes reports that Candle In The Wind was the only diamond-certified song until 2013’s Love The Way You Lie by Eminiem featuring Rihanna.
Unsurprisingly, Lil Nas X (who recently came out) was ecstatic by the news.

Going triple-platinum
While it was originally announced that Old Town Road did, in fact, make it to diamond certification, the Twitter account ChartData clarified that the song is actually triple platinum. This was confirmed by The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Multi-platinum indicates that a song has reached over two million sales and streams.
To clarify: Columbia’s twitter account posted a tweet celebrating “Old Town Road” going Diamond, which has since been deleted. @RIAA confirms the song is 3x Platinum. Occasionally mistakes happen.

Still, this news is a milestone for the breakout queer artist, who is currently in Europe. Old Town Road is also the longest-running Hot 100 #1 hip-hop song of all time, topping the charts for 13 weeks.
