Little Mix released their newest music video today, featuring none other than Nicki Minaj. It is one powerful, middle finger to gender stereotypes and the patriarchy.
Woman Like Me is a fun and powerful depiction of the strength of women.
Set on a stuffy, sprawling estate, all four members of Little Mix, including Jesy Nelson, Jade Thirlwall, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, and Perrie Edwards, reject what’s expected of them.
They take on things traditionally relegated to women — household chores like ironing and vacuuming, as well eating delicately — and wholly reject them.
Minaj’s role is rapping as a portrait. Her verse further encourages the Little Mix women to embrace the women they really are.
It’s thrilling and catchy and empowering.
In the era of the Me Too movement, Time’s Up, and women demanding the space, respect, and platforms they’ve always deserved, Little Mix has always been vocal advocates for feminism.
All of their albums so far have had empowering anthems for all their fans, such as Salute, Little Me, and Secret Love Song, but were adopted particularly by young women and the LGBTI community.
This song is no different. Its message of women unabashedly being themselves, stereotypes be damned, deserves a round of applause.
