London’s original gay gym to close

London’s longest running and biggest gay gym Paris Gym is closing down.

The training centre, which has been running for 20 years in the heart of Vauxhall, will be closing down on 27 June at 4pm.

This is just the latest in a long run of closures in London’s LGBTI scene. The Black Cap in Camden closed suddenly earlier this month and the threats to shut down the Royal Vauxhall Tavern are growing.

Writing on Facebook, gym runners Peter Gann and Phil Hathaway announced the closure. He promised all members will receive refunds and a party is being planned.

‘We are sure you can imagine that this has been an extremely difficult decision for us, not
least because of the staff, personal trainers and members, but also the drawing to a close
of 20 years as a proud and integral member of London’s gay community,’ they said.

‘We have worked very hard over the past few years in an endeavour to keep Paris Gym’s heart beating but circumstances have finally caught with us and we’ve decided to bow out
on a high note rather than slip into a sad & desperate decline.

‘An overwhelming number of factors have conspired to bring us to this unfortunate decision. Unfortunately this decision is now final as all contracts with our landlord have been duly signed.

They added: ‘We would like to thank all members for their custom, support and friendship but especially a huge loving thank you to those who have supported us across the years through thick and thin.

‘We really hope we’ve had a positive impact upon your lives.’
