Love, Simon will go to college in new sequel

  • Love, Creekwood will follow the Love, Simon story while Hulu is also doing a TV spinoff, Love, Victor.

Gay teen romantic comedy Love, Simon became the LGBT+ movie hit of the year in 2018.

Now Becky Albertalli, the author of the original novel has announced a new sequel – Love, Creekwood.

It’s further good news for fans who have been clamoring for more from the ‘Simon-verse’. They will also be getting a TV spinoff – Love, Victor – on streaming platform Hulu

Becky Albertalli tweeted yesterday with the cover for her new novella. And she joked:

‘Me for literally years: this is the end of the Simonverse. There are no sequels coming. Never.

‘Me right now: Love, Creekwood, a Simonverse novella, out 6/30/20 from @balzerandbray in hardcover, e-book, and audio. No info yet on int’l availability, but I hope to know more soon!’

The Simon-verse story so far

The Love, Simon story started as a 2015 novelty by Albertalli called Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda.

It follows Simon Spier, a closeted gay high-school boy. He is forced to come out after a blackmailer discovers Simon’s e-mails written to another closeted classmate with whom he has fallen in love.

It was that story that was turned into the popular 2018 movie.

But Albertalli also continued the story in her 2018 novel, Leah on the Offbeat.

That book focuses on Simon’s best friend Leah. And there’s something even Simon doesn’t know about Leah – that she’s bisexual.

The story tracks her attempts to deal with various personal issues including friendships and relationships, body image, sexuality, self-esteem, going to college and feeling like an outsider.

Meanwhile the new TV series Love, Victor will debut for 10 episodes in June. It will focus on Victor, as a new student at Creekwood High School. The series follows his journey of self-discovery.

He will face challenges at home and struggle with his sexual orientation. And he will reach out to Simon when it seems too difficult for him to navigate through high school.

A second season is already in the pipeline. And we already know Disney considered it too racy to be screened on ‘family, friendly’ Disney+. That’s why it’s moved to Hulu, which Disney also owns.

So now fans will be asking what Love, Creekwood will be all about.

Albertalli says it will be ‘all emails, and it’s set during the gang’s first year of college (after Leah on the Offbeat, before Love, Victor). DEFINITELY contains spoilers for Simon and Leah’s books’.

Moreover, she said it contains ‘shenanigans, exclamation points, yearning, Drunk Simon, Nostalgic Blue, Finals Week Abby, Valentine’s Day Leah, big decisions, and MUCH talk of kissing’.

Proceeds will help stop LGBT+ youth suicide

Meanwhile Albertalli has proven again what a big LGBT+ ally she is by making an amazing pledge. She will be donating all the proceeds from Love, Creekwood to LGBT+ youth suicide prevention charity The Trevor Project.

She said: ‘I’m donating 100% of my English language royalty advance to @TrevorProject. [It’s] the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) young people under 25.

‘They do the work I can’t, and they do it with such thoughtfulness, care, and commitment to research-based best practices.

‘They have saved many of my readers’ lives. And, as I’m sure you can imagine, there’s been a huge spike in the volume of crisis calls due to COVID19 and its specific impact on LGBTQ youth.’
