Makers of period panties launch line for transgender men

The Boyshort was designed specifically with trans guys and gender non-conforming people in mind.

An underwear company that made headlines earlier this year for launching ‘period panties’ for women has unveiled a new line for transgender men.

The Boyshort is Thinx’s ‘most gender-neutral style to date’ and was designed specifically with trans guys and gender non-conforming people in mind.

The line was launched on Saturday (14 November) in honor of Transgender Awareness Week.

‘Over the past few months, we have received many gentle reminders that women aren’t the only ones with periods,’ the company said in an email.

‘We often forget that in the case of a female to male transition, periods don’t stop coming every month.

‘For the trans community, the cycle isn’t just an inconvenience, as it is for so many of us, but rather a frequent, discomforting reminder of an ongoing battle.

‘We are here to join the conversation and raise the voices of those affected. We are here to say that bleeding does not make you female, it makes you human.’

In an emotional new advert, New York-based transgender model Sawyer Devuyst explains that he as identified as male but still got periods for about five years.

‘I would wear multiple pairs of underwear with a pair of boxers on top of that, just to make sure that I didn’t leak anywhere or no one knew I had my period,’ he says.

‘It’s definitely a safety risk. You’re in the men’s room and somebody hears you rustling a paper in the stall because you’re changing your tampon. That outs you.’

Devuyst says people are not talking about transgender male periods because there is a lack of trans male visibility and a sense of shame around menstruation.

‘A product like Thinx really makes people feel secure,’ he continues.

‘And that’s regardless if you’re a woman or a trans man or a non-binary trans person who gets their period.’
