Malaysia newspaper outs hook up spot for gay men in Petaling Jaya city park

A Malaysian tabloid has publicly identified a park near Kuala Lumpur which it claims is a nocturnal meeting place for gay and bisexual men looking to hook up with each other.

The English language the StarMetro newspaper sent its reporters to spy on men in the park and claimed to have identified several people engaged in ‘immoral activities.’

The newspaper published the full name of the park. However GSN will not be identifying the park other than to say that it is to the west of Kuala Lumpur in Petaling Jaya.

The newspaper also published anonymous interviews with two men who have sex with men who claimed to use the park as a spot to hook up with other men.

The story was criticized by Malaysian LGBTI rights group Seksualiti Merdeka who said it had ‘deliberately exposed’ the privacy of gay men.

‘The article seems to allow for the invasion of individual privacy,’ the group said, according to the Malay Mail Online.

‘This is a form of violation and abuse which is frequently argued as justified due to “moral” reasons. What gives the media the right to determine morality for others? Is it moral to perpetuate discrimination and injustice, and expose the lives of vulnerable communities to further harm?’

The story comes only days after the same newspaper printed a transphobic story about the arrest of a dozen transgender women in Penang – misgendering them and publishing a photo of one of the arrested women.
