LGBTI people face imprisonment in Burundi

A 42-year-old is being charged with sodomy in Uganda.

Michael Okotel, a former employee of Northern Uganda Rehabilitation Programme, was remanded in prison until his plea can be heard by the High Court.

It is alleged he had sex with an 18-year-old male.

Some sources claim it is his nephew, while others say it was someone he met while helping to keep the peace and improve the livelihoods of where he was stationed in Soroti.

Okotel will re-appear before the Chief Magistrates Court on 20 October.

This is just the latest of several arrests made against LGBTI people under the Penal Code. Arrests have become more frequent in recent months.

It is thought that this is the authorities sending the LGBTI community a message: even though parliament has yet to reinstate a new strict Anti-Homosexuality Bill – it is still illegal.
