Manchester Pride announces ‘Once Upon a Time’ theme for 2016

Manchester Pride is one of the biggest dates on the UK's LGBTI calendar

Applications are now open for this year’s Manchester Pride Parade, taking place over the August Bank Holiday Weekend – and this year’s theme will have a fairytale theme called ‘Once Upon a Time’.

The Manchester Pride Parade – part of the Big Weekend celebrations – starts on Liverpool Road, passing by the Town Hall and the Gay Village before finishing on Whitworth Street.

The Grand Marshal of last year’s Manchester Pride Parade was iconic actor Sir Ian McKellen, and if the last six years are anything to go by, the cast of British soap Coronation Street will once again greet the crowds from their own float.

Mark Fletcher, Chief Executive for Manchester Pride, commented: ‘As we reflect on years gone by in our wonderful City, we recognize many stories, moments, events and occasions that have occurred in order to allow us to reach the level of freedom that our LGBT communities enjoy today.

‘Once upon a time allows us to look back, reflect and plan the next steps for the advancement of LGBT equality.’
