Manila Luzon and Jujubee praise Crazy Rich Asians

Manila Luzon and Jujubee have shared their excitement around new movie Crazy Rich Asians.

The girls spoke about the film to Gay Star News yesterday at DragWorld UK in London.

Crazy Rich Asians was released on 15 August in the US. It’s slated for a huge number one debut the box office next week ahead of The Meg.

‘Asian pop stars aren’t around very often’

Manila told us: ‘I haven’t seen it yet. I would assume it’s a movie about me, because I’m crazy, and I’m definitely rich. Not in money, but like how chocolate is rich…’

She furthermore added: ‘I’ll definitely be seeing it. I’m sad I wasn’t able to see it on opening weekend because I’m here. But I do want to support. Asian representation in the media is important.

‘We have representations from other places, [but, for example], Asian pop stars aren’t around very often. On Snatch Game on RuPaul’s Drag Race, I was like “Well, I guess I could be Jackie Chan or Margaret Cho. They’re the only Asians I can think of.”

‘So I think that it’s great. I’m a big fan of Fresh Off the Boat, I’m a big fan of Kim’s Convenience, and I’m a big fan of Manila Luzon from RuPaul’s Drag Race.’

‘Like Black Panther for Asians’

Jujubee furthermore told us: ‘I was invited to see a viewing of it, but I had a flight! I’ve read on Twitter that it’s amazing. I saw a tweet that was like “This is like Black Panther for Asians.” It was from this woman of color and she was so excited to see it. I have to see it! I’ll be seeing it Monday.’

Jujubee was a contestant on season two of RuPaul’s Drag Race and also appeared on RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars season one.

Meanwhile Manila appeared on the third third season and All Stars season one.

Crazy Rich Asians currently has a 92% ‘fresh’ score at film reviewing aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.
