Manila Pride hosts its largest ever parade over its 25-year history

Metro Manila Pride 2019

Manila Pride more than doubled its record number of attendees yesterday (29 June).

Established in 1994 on the 25-year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, Metro Manila Pride turned 25 itself this year.

Estimates from the Marikina Sports Center recorded around 70,000 attendees showing up to brave intermittent rain. This is a huge jump from last year’s attendance of 25,000 people.

In fact, due to the sheer volume of people trying to attend the march, organizers had to shut down the parade.

‘Due to traffic, safety and security we are forced to stop the march,’ Metro Manila Pride tweeted, halfway through the parade. ‘We are not stopping anyone from coming in but because of the volume of people wanting to come in we are doing so by batch.’

They then added: ‘Please be patient and be kind to each other.’

This year’s theme was Resist Together, aiming to shine a spotlight on how far the LGBTI rights movement has come both at home and abroad.

Philippines President mocks LGBTI community

Last month, the President of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte joked he used to be gay, but ‘cured’ himself.

During his speech, Duterte called his political opponent, Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, gay.

According to Rappler, he then stated: ‘I said: “Are you sure?” They said: “You ask any gay person who sees Trillanes move, they’ll say he’s gay.” No wonder.

‘Good thing Trillanes and I are similar. But I cured myself,’ Duterte bizarrely remarked.

He then added: ‘When I began a relationship with [Elizabeth] Zimmerman, I said, this is it. I became a man again.’

Zimmerman is the 74-year-old president’s ex-wife. They annulled their marriage in 2000.

Duterte also previously joked opponent Solicitor General Florin Hilbay was gay.

The President said: ‘[Hilbay’s] girlfriend is Agot Isidro. Her boyfriend is gay,’ reports Manila Bulletin.

He went on to say Hilbay, whilst Solicitor General, had filled his office with homosexuals.

‘This son of a bitch Hilbay. He did nothing when he was solicitor general. He filled his office with homosexuals,’ he said.
