Manny Pacquiao: Gay couples are ‘worse than animals’

Boxer Manny Pacquiao is a national hero in his native Philippines.

Filipino boxer, pastor and national hero Manny Pacquiao has said gay couples are ‘worse than animals.’

The eight-time world champion, who is running for a seat in the Senate, was asked about his stance on gay marriage in an interview with Bilang Pilipino on Monday (15 February).

‘It’s only common sense. Would you see any species of animals who engage in male to male, female to female [sexual] relations? Animals, then, are better than humans [in that sense]. They know how to distinguish males from females,’ he said.

‘If people then engage in male to male, female to female relations, then they are worse than animals.’

At the time of writing, a clip of the interview had been viewed more than 1.5 million times on Facebook alone.

Pacquiao previously said he loves and supports LGBTI people, but opposes gay marriage.

‘I’m not against the gay people,’ he told AP in 2012.

‘I’m not condemning them… I have a cousin (who is) gay. I have relatives (who are) gay. I have a lot of friends (who are) gay, so I’m not condemning gays. What I said is I’m not in favor of same-sex marriage.’
