- Always Be My Baby singer Mariah Carey will perform at Brighton’s Pride in the Park on 1 August.
Mariah Carey is to headline this year’s Brighton Pride park festival on England’s south coast.
Organizers have just announced Carey, most famous for All I Want For Christmas Is You, as their headliner.
Carey is the best-selling solo female artist of all time. She has sold more than 200 million albums and had 19 number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100.
But Carey is also an LGBT+ ally. In 2016, American LGBT+ media organization GLAAD gave her their annual Ally Award.
And her hit song Hero is considered a gay anthem.
Brighton Pride 2020
Brighton Pride now runs over two days – Saturday 1 August and Sunday 2 August. Organizers have already announced American girl group Pussycat Dolls as their Sunday headliners.
As well as the park-based festival, the Pride features a march through the English south-coast city. And there’s a separate Pride Village Party in the gay village, near Brighton’s famous pebble beach.
The event is estimated to attract 450,000 people to the city and inject over £20million into the local economy. Since new organizers took over in 2013, it has raised around £900,000 for local LGBT+ community organizations.
It will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2020. In recent years, it has built a reputation for attracting big name music stars with Kylie headline in 2019 and Britney Spears in 2018.
Paul Kemp, director of Brighton and Hove Pride, said: ‘We are beyond thrilled that Mariah is joining our LGBTQ+ celebrations for our 30th anniversary.
‘Mariah is a staunch LGBTQ+ ally and having her perform at Pride really helps us highlight our campaigning for LGBTQ+ equality to a global audience.
‘Mariah is headlining the main stage but there are loads more artist announcements to come. Watch this space for more great LGBTQ+ performers and allies over the coming weeks.’
