#MarriageEquality third most popular Twitter hashtag of 2015

#MarriageEquality was the third most popular Twitter hashtag of 2015, spiking in May and June when Ireland and US respectively legalized gay marriage.

#JeSuisCharlie and #PrayForParis, showing solidarity with the victims of the terrorist attacks on the French capital in January and November, were the most popular hashtags among Twitter’s 320 million global users.

#HomeToVote, used by Irish expats to share their experiences of returning to their country to vote in the gay marriage referendum, also became hugely popular in May.

And #LoveWins, celebrating the US Supreme Court’s landmark decision legalizing gay marriage nationwide, started trending worldwide after 26 June.

US President Barack Obama’s post that day was the fourth most popular tweet of the year, with nearly 1 million retweets and favorites.

Caitlyn Jenner’s coming out tweet was also in the top 10, with the top three spots all going to boyband One Direction.

The transgender activist also broke a Guinness World Record by gaining 1 million followers in just over 4 hours, beating the previous record set by @POTUS.
