- The marriage creates Marvel’s first true LGBT+ power couple.
Marvel has revealed the wedding fans have long waited for – between two gay superheroes.
The big ending to Empyre #4, out yesterday, was that Young Avengers co-founders and superheroes Hulkling and Wiccan are married.
The comic shows a flashback to a ceremony when the pair wed – surrounded by close family and other Young Avengers.
The comics have developed the characters of Wiccan (William ‘Billy’ Kaplan) and Hulkling (Theodore ‘Teddy’ Altman) since they first appeared in 2005.
And the teen Young Avengers have become major characters in the Marvel universe.
Meanwhile fans have been hoping and expecting the marriage for some time. When Billy lost his powers, Teddy proposed to him, reigniting their relationship.
Moreover, fans have also previously seen a flash forward to a future date where Billy and Teddy are living happily together and have a daughter, Katie.
Creators Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung invented the characters and were surprised how quickly fans caught on to their relationship.
Initially Heinberg pitched Hulkling to Marvel as a female character who was using her shape-shifting superpowers to pose as a man.
However, he then approached the comic giant and said he wanted to maintain Teddy and Billy as gay – and in a relationship.
As a result, the pair quickly became two of the comic world’s most prominent LGBT+ characters.
Cheung said: ‘Billy and Teddy really became fully fleshed people to me, thanks to Allan’s incredible writing, and it’s been wonderfully rewarding to follow their growth and evolution under the guidance of other creators over the years.
‘Now that they’re taking their relationship to the next level, I can’t wait to watch where their next adventure takes them!’
Meanwhile fans are just as excited. After the news broke last night, they left behind any concerns about ‘spoilers’ to talk about the marriage revelation on social media.
