After losing 35 pounds, Matt Bomer said he stopped counting.
The actor had filmed the scenes of HBO’s The Normal Heart during which his character is healthy then during a four month break in filming, the really hard work began.
Bomer went on an extreme weight loss plan in order to realistically portray his character dying from AIDS.
He told Jimmy Fallon during a visit to The Tonight Show this week that he began by going on a 21 day fast. When he resumed eating, it was only 300-400 calories per day.
‘It should not be done without medical supervision,’ said the actor who was already trim and fit when he began the regiment.
His entire calorie intake used to be ‘two bites of my lunch then suddenly it wasn’t anymore.’
Fallon asked if it as tough for Bomer to gain the weight back.
The actor replied with a laugh: ‘No, that happened immediately.’
Just after he wrapped filming, Bomer said it was Thanksgiving and he was ready to ‘eat everything.’
But his body was not.
‘My stomach was like, "No, you won’t." It was crazy.’
The Normal Heart, about the early days of the AIDS crisis in New York City, premieres on HBO on 25 May.
