Media portrays us as just friends, says Angel Haze about Ireland Baldwin

US rapper Angel Haze has spoken about her relationship with US model Ireland Baldwin, saying because they are two women in a lesbian relationship the media treats them differently.

22-year-old Haze, a rapper best known for her song Battle Cry with Australian pop star Sia, spoke about perceptions of her and Baldwin, and the boundaries they come up against.

‘It’s funny. It’s rad in some ways, it sucks in others,’ she said.

‘There are still certain limitations for women. If we were two guys, it’d be insane, negatively insane with the attention. With us it’s all being very positive, the media are like, ‘Oh they’re so cute, they’re best friends.’’

‘An interracial gay couple, I mean that’s just weird for America right now. We fuck and friends don’t fuck. I have never fucked one of my friends. Once I see you in that way, it doesn’t happen.’

‘But we do fuck and it’s crazy and that’s weird to say because I think about it in terms of an audience reading it and them thinking, ‘What the hell?’ But it happens.’

The pair have been very open about their relationship. Between their social media accounts, the pair often post romantic photos of each other.

In the interview with UK newspaper The Independent, Haze also spoke about her idea of what love is, and how this has changed recently.

‘When you find it love it definitely amends your perspective on certain things,’ said Haze.

‘I was dating a guy I really liked about a year ago and being around him and realising so many things about myself totally made me hate the traditional ideas of what a relationship should be, of what romance should be.’

‘You go out and you’re searching for this Utopian feeling, butterflies; that thing where you can’t stop thinking about them. It doesn’t have to be so overwhelming.’

18-year-old Baldwin is the daughter of US Hollywood stars Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin. Baldwin himself has had run-ins with the gay media after his use of the homophobic slur ‘faggot’.
