Meet the first same-sex couple to marry in Australia

Lauren Price and Amy Laker are the first same-sex couple to marry in Australia

Lauren Price and Amy Laker were among the first same-sex couples to marry in Australia yesterday (16 December).

The pair met in a pub in Sydney, just after Lauren moved to Australia from Wales.

‘We clicked instantly,’ Amy told Gay Star News.

On their wedding day, Amy said: ‘Lauren and I couldn’t be happier that our family and friends get to spend the first day of the rest of our lives together with us.

‘This is all thanks to the Australian people who have fought for this issue to be put to rest and all of the community groups showing their support,’ Amy said.

Lauren told Gay Star News: ‘It is great being able to call my wife my wife!’

She said they’ve been overwhelmed by the amount of people who wished them well for their wedding day.

Debriefing on the day after their wedding, she tells GSN: ‘I have been overwhelmed by the positive responses from people across the globe and even a few people in the supermarket today.

‘Having my family over from Wales to celebrate such a momentous occasion was amazing,’ she said.

Married before the rest of the country

The Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages granted the couple to be able to waive the mandatory 30-day waiting period, citing financial costs.

They originally planned a civil partnership ceremony for this day but then decided to change to a marriage.

This waiving of the waiting period meant they could marry before the rest of the country. This is just a week after marriage equality became legal.

During the meeting, the couple were unsure if it would work. Officials told them to wait while they deliberated on the decision.

‘It was the longest ten minutes of our lives,’ Laker told the Daily Mail. ‘When she came back in and said she had good news I just started crying.’

They also chose not to marry in the UK because Laker’s mother is too unwell to travel.

Amy told GSN: ‘We both are feeling the love and hope the LGBTIQ youth of Australia are aware of the support from over 60% of Australians.

‘We hope all of these wonderful stories of marriage in the LGBTIQ community encourages everyone to be themselves and show support to anyone that may be struggling with their sexuality,’ she said.

Amy also said: ‘For us being legally married is more about automatically being next of kin.

‘[It’s] also because we want children so it makes that clearer. This is my child’s other mother, my wife,’ she said.
