Megan Rapinoe’s girlfriend says attacks on her ‘scare the sh*t out of me’

Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe

WNBA star Sue Bird wrote about girlfriend Megan Rapinoe — one of the many stars of the United States women’s soccer team — and the conservative attacks against her.

Bird, who plays for the Seattle Storm, penned an article for The Players Tribune. The article is titled: ‘So the President F*cking Hates My Girlfriend.’

In the piece, Bird writes about a variety of issues, from Rapinoe’s pink hair (which she was against) to learning more about soccer (she calls Rapinoe an ‘alien’ for being so good at penalty kicks) and the fight for equal pay.

The heart of the post, however, is Bird discussing Rapinoe’s politics and subsequent conservative attacks against her.

An ‘out-of-body experience’

‘I’ll answer The Question,’ Bird writes early on. ‘”What’s it like to have the literal President of the literal United States (of literal America) go Full Adolescent Boy on your girlfriend?”‘

Her answer?

‘It’s WEIRD. And I’d say I actually had a pretty standard reaction to it: which was to freak out a little.’

Rapinoe made headlines clashing with Trump last week after she said she’s ‘not going to the fucking White House’. Trump, predictably, was not happy.

This came after the soccer midfielder refused to sing or put her hand on her heart for the national anthem at the tournament.

‘Our politics are similar,’ Bird explains of her and Rapinoe. ‘After we won the WNBA title in Seattle last season, no way were we going to the (f*cking) White House! — but our dispositions are not.

‘And as we’ve been talking through a lot of this “stuff,” as it’s been happening to her, you know, I’ll be honest here….. some of it scares the sh*t out of me!!’

She describes Trump’s attacks on Rapinoe are ‘gross’ but what’s ‘legitimately scary’ is how it breeds hostility.

‘Now suddenly you’ve got all these MAGA peeps getting hostile in your mentions. And you’ve got all these crazy blogs writing terrible things about this person you care so much about. And now they’re doing takedowns of Megan on Fox News, and who knows whatever else,’ she says.  ‘It’s like an out-of-body experience, really — that’s how I’d describe it. That’s how it was for me.’

Megan Rapinoe is unfazed

Despite all this happening, Bird shares how impressed she is with her partner.

‘You just cannot shake that girl. She’s going to do her thing, at her own damn speed, to her own damn rhythm, and she’s going to apologize to exactly NO ONE for it,’ she enthuses as the post continues.

She describes Rapinoe as ‘unfazed’ in the face of Trump’s vitriol.

‘I think Megan’s sensitivity is what drives her to fight for others. I think it’s what drove her to take a knee,’ Bird writes. ‘The Megan you’re seeing now? It’s the stronger version of the one who knelt in the first place.

‘All the threats, all the criticism, all the fallout — coming out on the other side of that is what makes her seem so unfazed by the assholes of the world now. I think in trying to help others, Megan has cemented who she is.’

The USWNT won their semifinal match against England on Tuesday (2 July), though Rapinoe didn’t play due to a hamstring strain. They face Sweden or the Netherlands in the final on Sunday (7 July).
