Meredith Baxter, sober in real life, to play a boozer on CBS daytime soap

Meredith Baxter, who long ago gave up drinking in real life, will be hitting the bottle on the CBS daytime soap The Young and the Restless starting early next month.

Baxter will join the cast as Maureen, a woman described as ‘charming, intelligent, middle-class woman who has always aspired to a more privileged life than she’s had,’ according to TVGuide.com.

The character will be introduced as a drinking buddy of a fallen off the wagon Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott).

It sounds like a juicy part for three-time Emmy nominated Baxter.

Maureen appears kind and sympathetic but in reality can be quite manipulative and is skilled at getting people to do the things she wants them to do by making them think it’s their idea.

Baxter, who came out publicly as a lesbian in 2009, has never appeared in a daytime soap.

She is best known for her long run as Elyse Keaton on the sitcom Family Ties, her role as Nancy Lawrence Maitland on the drama series Family, and for scores of television movies including an Emmy nominated performance in The Betty Broderick Story.

Baxter will make her first appearance on the soap on 8 September and will appear through the fall.
