Michael Sam may be returning to the dance floor tonight on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars but his weekend was all about football.
The first openly gay man to be drafted by an NFL team only to be later cut is giving it another try. Sam participated in the NFL’s first Veteran’s Combine on Sunday (22 March) in Tempe, Arizona.
Sam was one of 105 free agents who did drills in front of scouts from NFL teams.
‘As long as I still have that will, as long as I’m still healthy and can play this game, you will continue to see me fighting to get in this league,’ Sam told reporters after completing his drills.
‘I am very confident that I will be playing football this year somewhere,’ Sam added. ‘So we’ll leave that at that.’
Sam was cut from the St. Louis Rams before the regular season began last fall then latest cut from the Dallas Cowboys practice squad.
If not signed by an NFL team this year, would he consider going north to play for the Canadian Football League.
‘If that’s an opportunity, then I will take it,’ Sam said.
According to ESPN, Sam was also asked at the combine about whether his participation on Dancing With the Stars will impact his chances of getting signed by a team.
Sam was not interested in replying.
‘Next question,’ he said.
