Model and TV show host Sushant Divgikar is named Mr Gay India

24-year-old model and psychology masters degree holder Sushant Divgikar has been named Mr Gay India and will represent his homeland at the 2014 Mr Gay World pageant in Rome this year.

Divgikar was named Mr Gay India on 13 July and on top of counseling young LGBTIs he also hosts a show on the UTV Bindass channel.

Divgikar wanted to compete in the competition last year but was still finishing his degree.

But after applying to become Mr Gay India 2014 he received a call from Mr Gay India 2013 Nolan Lewis telling him he’d won the role.

Divgikar told The Asian Age that he couldn’t have achieved what he had without the support of his family and that he hoped he could be a role model and voice for LGBTI Indians who did not yet have that support from theirs.

‘I have always been open about my sexuality and have had positive and beautiful people around me,’ Divgikar said.

‘I’ve lived a happy life and there’s no sad story in the background. I have a great support system in my parents, friends and family … I’ve been brought up very well, and never created any scene that can be a cause of worry to my parents.

‘I want to be the voice of the people who don’t have resources to come out of the closet. I will voice their concerns on this international platform.’

Divgikar also revealed that he is being coached by Miss India World 2006 Natasha Suri, while his mother is working on his dietary needs in preparation for the competition.

The Mr Gay World competition runs from 24-31 August this year.
