Modern Family’s Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson got choked up over on-screen wedding

For five years, they have played the fictional couple of Cam and Mitch on ABC’s Modern Family.

But when it came time to shoot the upcoming two-part wedding episode featuring their characters as the grooms, the emotions got unexpectedly real.

‘I have great affection for this man,’ Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who plays Mitch, said during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live this week.

‘To look at him and to say these great words and to be able to say "I do" to someone even if they’re going to be a fake husband, it does create a certain emotion and I did get very emotional.’

Said Stonestreet: ‘This just feels really great to know that at the end of 5 years Mitch and Cam are having a little bit of completion of their relationship.’

For Ferguson, who is also gay in real life, the wedding was a case of art imitating life since he had just married lawyer Justin Mikita.

‘It was very bizarre just being married in real life – I got married in July then got engaged again in September to Eric and I was like, "I’m Elizabeth Taylor all of a sudden." It was surreal.’

Miss Taylor, the late Oscar winning actress and AIDS activist, was famously married eight times including twice to actor Richard Burton.
