Monica Lewinsky sings Over the Rainbow at Alan Cumming’s NYC bar

Monica Lewinsky

Alan Cumming had a pretty big guest at his New York City bar, atply titled Club Cumming, on Monday (23 July) night. It was none other than Monica Lewinsky.

The anti-bullying advocate was at the bar celebrating her 45th birthday and she ended up on stage herself.

But not before the whole crowd sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to her. She tweeted out a video of the moment, calling herself a ‘lucky girl’.

Alexander Kacala, who was there last night and wrote about the event, said Cumming himself then sang a well-known song — Part of Your World from Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

After his crooning moment, he ‘begged and pleaded’ for Lewinsky to join him on stage.

Despite some shyness and hesitation, she eventually did. She ended up singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow from the classic musical The Wizard of Oz.

Where trouble melts like lemon drops

Someone in the audience captured the moment and posted the video to Instagram.

The audience is cheering her on the entire time.

When her voice has a little hitch at the start, someone shouts out: ‘You got this, girl!’ Eventually, the whole audience starts singing along with her and it become a truly great moment.

Kacala put it succinctly what it was like to be in the room:

‘The room was packed with gay men, who like me, probably grew up hearing stories of oral sex, scandal, blue dresses, denial, and impeachment. Those headlines or that fodder didn’t matter. What mattered is that a girl came out to celebrate her birthday in a bar, and she gave the gays what they wanted: a Judy Garland ballad wrapped up in lots of metaphor.’

Kacala also added Lewinsky isn’t the first well-known person to grace the bar. Previously, the likes of Emma Stone, Billie Jean King, Paul McCartney, and Vanessa Williams have all stopped by.
