Mormon school board leader: ‘don’t teach kids sex ed or they’ll turn gay’

Brooke Ashjian Fresno Unified School Board President makes homophobic comments

A Mormon school board president says he fears if you teach kids ‘it’s ok to be LGBT… maybe you will sway the kid to go that way.’

Brooke Ashjian leads the school board at Fresno Unified.

He made the comments in the local Fresno Bee paper in an article looking at a new sex education law.

The California Healthy Youth Act made sex education compulsory at middle and high school in the state, in 2016.

Schools are required to teach unbiased and medically accurate sex education.

This includes teaching kids about the options of birth control and abortion.

Ashjian has long opted his children out of sex education classes in the district he serves. He believes it’s the role of the parent to teach ‘morality.’

Speaking to the Fresno Bee, that covers the San Joaquin Valley in California he said:

‘We didn’t want someone else teaching our kids about morality, and what was right and what was wrong.

‘That’s the role of a father and mother: You bring a child into the world and you talk to them about things that matter.’

Ashjian is anti-abortion and a supporter of Donald Trump.

He has confirmed his district will follow the new law.

However voicing his concerns over the bill, he says kids could be ‘swayed’ by the sex education:

‘My biggest fear in teaching this – which we’re going to do it because it’s the law – but you have kids who are extremely moldable at this stage.

‘If you start telling them that LGBT is OK and that it’s a way of life, well maybe you just swayed the kid to go that way’

Ashjian took to Twitter to defend his statements. Questioning the Fresno Bee why this had become a matter of conversation now, he followed up with this belter:

The school board contradicts the president

The school board has responded to the comments made by Ashjian in a press release.

‘Fresno Unified firmly believes that students and staff perform best in an environment where tolerance, diversity, and inclusiveness are practiced and valued.’

Confirming that:

‘Fresno Unified will continue to provide our students age appropriate sex education in accordance with the Healthy Youth Act.’
