Morocco: Two men arrested for gay sex in a car

Two young Moroccan men, were arrested and after police ‘caught’ them ‘in action’ having gay sex.

The men were arrested during the weekend while ‘practicing sodomy’ in car stationed next to a park in Témara, a suburb of Rabat, Morocco’s capital, reported the daily Assabah.

The two who were caught appeared before a Court of First Instance in Temara, on Monday (6 May) and accused by the state prosecutor of ‘sodomy’ and ‘undermining public morality’.

The two defendants, one engineer, 28, and another unemployed, 20 were said to have ‘admitted their crimes’ to the police.

The court adjurned the case to the following week and their trail, according to Assabah, is likely to draw a large crowd.

Article 489 of the Moroccan criminal code punishes same-sex acts with imprisonment of between six months and three years and a fine of 1,000 dirhams (€89 US$ 117).

Jameel, an LGBT rights advocate and editor of Gay Middle East Morocco, says he is trying to verify facts and follow the case.

The Moroccan authorities banned last year a gay cruise ship from docking at the port of Casablanca, while refusing to comment on their decision.
